Associate Director, Structural Biology

For 14 years, Nimbus Therapeutics has placed structure-based drug design and computational chemistry in a central role in its mission to develop breakthrough medicines, and has successfully delivered multiple class-leading drug candidates to the clinic with discipline to these core capabilities.  As Nimbus enters a new chapter, we are redoubling this commitment and seeking an exceptional Structural Biologist to join our team.  This role will provide technical and tactical expertise and input to Nimbus’ small molecule drug discovery programs through the application of protein sciences, protein structure determination and biophysics, and will partner with an experienced, cross-disciplinary team savvy with rational, structure-based design in the mission to develop our next generation of drug candidates.

In this role, you will:

  • Provide leadership and expertise in the areas of protein biochemistry, biophysics and protein characterization and structure determination, developing strategies to structurally enable a portfolio of drug targets in collaboration with academic and industrial collaborators and a global network of CROs.
  • Partner with computational & medicinal chemists, using structural insights to formulate design strategies and prioritize chemistry.
  • Design biophysical screening, kinetics, and other mechanistic studies to support hit identification, validation, compound progression.
  • Be fully integrated in cross-functional drug discovery teams, making substantial intellectual contributions to all levels of program strategy.
  • Establish and maintain strong productive relationships with external partners and collaborators.
  • Contribute to external presence of team, including publishing/presenting critical research.

These Qualifications Will Help This Role Be Successful:

  • PhD in biochemistry, biophysics, or a related scientific field with a sound knowledge of protein sciences, structural biology and biophysics
  • 7+ years industry experience in pharma/biotech, effectively operating in a multidisciplinary drug discovery team environment and successfully impacting discovery
  • Passion for structure determination of protein-ligand complexes by x-ray crystallography and cryo-EM and a broad understanding of the characterization of protein-ligand interactions by biophysical methods. Strong working knowledge of techniques such as NMR, ITC, TSA, SPR, MST, etc.
  • Track record of experimental design, assay development/optimization and data analysis
  • Experience with computational chemistry tools that can help accelerate structure-based drug design and/or fluency in chemistry to influence compound design and productively engage with medicinal chemists and other discovery scientists would be distinguishing
  • Excellent verbal and written communication with strong publication record and organizational skills required. In particular, skill in managing multiple projects from different therapeutic areas with clear understanding of project needs and ensuring delivery of high-quality data with clear communication of timeline
  • Ability to navigate, problem-solve, execute, and lead in a dynamic, fast-paced and evolving environment.

A Snapshot of Nimbus

Our Science

At Nimbus, we design breakthrough medicines. Utilizing our powerful structure-based drug discovery engine, we create potent and selective small molecule compounds targeting proteins that are known to be fundamental drivers of pathology in highly prevalent human diseases and which have proven difficult for other drug makers to tackle. With a decade-plus track record of success, we’ve built a world-class team in both computationally driven drug discovery and early clinical development while continuing to move the needle for patients.

Our Culture

Nimbus is a close-knit company (our employees are Nimbi, if you are curious!) that values a fast-paced, entrepreneurial, intellectual-stimulating, and collaborative environment. We live by our Core Values: Integrity, a Passion for Excellence, Teamwork, and Authentic Communication and strive to build a community where we bring out the best in each other professionally and personally.
